Description
Harry Y. Bright was a British artist known for his ornithological and natural history paintings, especially of small songbirds. He produced watercolors, oils and illustrations, including the books Birds and Blossom (1879) and The ABC of Pretty Birdies (1896). His father, Henry Bright (1810-1873), was also a painter.
This painting was previously in the collection of Sir Edwin A.G. Manton, an insurance company executive and patron of the arts. At his death, AIG referred to him as one of the company’s “founding fathers” who had taken a leading role in building the company over many decades. A major benefactor of the Tate Gallery, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994 for his philanthropy.
