Building and grounds of the home of Daniel Wheeler (1771-1840), a Quaker minister who was also a prosperous English farmer, seed merchant and engineer. Wheeler came to St. Petersburg, Russia in 1818, at the request of Czar Alexander I, who had requested a Quaker agriculturist to oversee the draining and reclamation of the vast acres of marshland around St. Petersburg. Wheeler, his family and servants lived there for the next 14 years. The original painting for this print was done by Daniel Wheeler’s son, Charles. In the mid 1830s, father and son sailed on a trip to the South Pacific to spread the Quaker message. After his death, Wheeler was memorialized in a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier.

Description

T. Sinclair was a color lithography firm in Philadelphia, active in the mid 19th century. They printed fine color plates for book publishers as well as separately issued topographical prints.

Condition: Generally very good, the paper with the usual light overall toning, some minor scattered wear, soiling, soft creases, faint foxing. Diagonal crease from lower left to top right barely visible, not obtrusive. Later professionally backed on supporting sheet of Japanese paper.
