The relief moon globe is set in an iron rod half meridian with a pointer. It is raised on an finely cast bronze stand in the classical taste with an acanthus decorated baluster standard and round dish base decorated with flower heads and leaf tips. The globe shows the hemisphere of the moon visible from earth as physical geography in raised relied on one side, and shows the same view instead as printed gores with the corresponding names of the craters, mountains, and seas (maria) engraved and printed on gores on the other side. In other words, both sides show the visible side of the moon — one half in raised relief, the other half printed with cartographic information. The dark side of the moon — which had not yet been mapped at the time — is not shown. Both sides are rendered in natural cream and brown tones. The cartouche gives a scale of 1:10,000,000, and Reimer’s catalog entry gave the vertical exaggeration of the height of the relief elements as 10 times. Another example of this globe is in the collection of the local history museum of Wiesbaden Naurod (Heimatmuseum Wiesbaden-Naurod).

Description

The globe was manufactured by Reimer, and modelled by Rudolf Dietz after sketches by Heinrich Eduard von Lade (1817-1904), a German businessman who retired on his fortune at the age of 44 and devoted the rest of his life to various avocations, including the establishment of an institute of fruit breeding and wine culture on his private estate at Geisenheim.

Rudolf Dietz, who modeled the relief portion of the globe, was a teacher in Germany best known for his popular books of dialect poems. In his spare time he was also a skilled amateur handicraftsman, photographer and successful school book author. He spent most of his life in Wiesbaden.

Dietrich Reimer (1818-1899) was a prolific manufacturer of terrestrial globes in the latter part of the nineteenth century, following the firm’s purchase of the Adami company in 1874. Heinrich Kiepert (1818-1899) is another notable name that often appears on Reimer globes.

Condition: Generally very good overall, uniformly toned, few minor abrasions professionally restored.
