Satyr Mask
Continental: 19th century
Gilt bronze
7 inches high, 4.5 inches wide, 3 inches deep

A gilt-bronze satyr mask in the neoclassical taste, depicted with a sly smile and sideways glance. A satyr is an ancient Greek or Roman mythological mischievous, lustful, drunken woodland god. It often has human attributes combined with those of a horse or goat.

This example is fitted with a wire for hanging on the wall as a plaque, though originally it quite possibly was a furniture or architectural mount.
