EASTWARD OR WESTWARD

This fine Art Deco advertising poster was produced for the Japanese shipping company NYK Line. The dramatic and graphic angular design by the talented graphic artist George Hemming was printed in 1934. Regularly $1,950, sale price $1,750. More information.

Like the poster above, the brass and wood stand of this George Philip & Son/ Rand McNally 30-Inch Terrestrial Globefrom around the 1940s also exemplifies the Art Deco style. This large and impressive globe stands 50 inches high and 41 inches diameter overall including the horizon band. Regularly $45,000, sale price $40,500. More information.

THE PARIS OLYMPICS: EVERYTHING'S ON THE TABLE

Illustration of an ancient Greek ivory and gold table in the Temple of Hera at Olympia and related artifacts, on which were placed the laurel wreaths destined to crown winners of the Olympic Games. This 18th century hand-colored engraving was published in Paris. Regularly $450, sale price $350. More information.

PARIS PANORAMA

This panoramic 18th-century view of Paris by Friedrich Bernhard Werner is over three feet wide, which allows considerable architectural and landscape detail. The hand-colored engraving is in an impressive gold leaf frame. Regularly $6,000, sale price $5,400. More information.

SPANISH STYLE FENCING IN THE NETHERLANDS

The Spanish School of swordsmanship is illustrated with precision and Baroque flair in these large prints from Academie de l’Espée. Above are two of several available from us. This lengthy 17th-century treatise by Girard Thibault systematizes the movements of the fencer according to geometric principles. Several prominent Dutch engravers contributed to this work including Crispijn de Passe. Regularly $1,250 each, sale price $1,100. More information.

COMING UPON A CASTLE COMPLEX

This standard sized glass wine bottle reproduces an unidentified European town in 3D that apparently retains many of its early historical buildings. Meticulously and expertly rendered out of painted wood and other materials is an entire castle complex is in the center of a picturesque valley between numerous houses and a church, while steamboats travel an interior waterway. A VISIT TO THE TOKYO TATTOO SOCIETY

American artist John Groth takes us inside a Japanese subculture in this large, unusual pen-and-ink and wash drawing of male and female bathers at the indoor pool of the Tokyo Tattoo Society. All of the participants are decorated with the elaborate, flowing designs characteristic of the traditional Japanese horimono tattooing. Regularly $2,400, sale price $1,900. More information.
